Mounties spoiled Cabramatta’s 95th year anniversary celebrations with a come from behind 34-22 win at New Era Stadium

The match was tipped to be an almighty battle with both sides looking to cement places in the top eight. The early going was like any local derby, tough and brutal. There was plenty of feeling in the match with both forward packs muscling up early on. The early momentum was with the visitors but the first real opportunity came at the 14 minute mark when Hala Katoa nearly scored in the corner. Only some good cover defence from Mounties repelled the try. Mounties had their share of possession on the Two Blues line but squandered a number of chances while attacking. Cabramatta opened the scoring after 19 minutes of play with the pommy connection of James Anthony and Bobby Goulding combining for the first try of the match. On the back of a penalty Anthony broke away before linking up with Goulding who crossed under the sticks. Nine minutes later Jamie Blewitt went flying through a hole to score next to the sticks. Saxon Fischer-Gray provided the final ball which saw Blewitt cross the line. Mounties registered their first points of the match with Braeden Batiste putting Brady Cheshire over wide out. Mounties then produced a perfect set after points with the visitors going 100 metres to score through Theo Leato. Cabramatta answered straight back with Aaron Teariki powering his way across the line to score although the put down looked dicey.

Much like the first half the opening to the 2nd stanza was a tight affair. Both sides had chances but failed to capitalize on their opportunities. Mounties were first to cross the stripe with Batiste showing good footwork to dance his way across after 52 minutes. This was the start of a purple patch for Mounties with two more tries in the space of eight minutes swinging the pendulum their way. The first came three minutes after the Batiste four pointer with Uila Ape-Esera crossing wide out. Brett Lahey converted from a tough angle giving his side a four point lead. The next came after a Cabramatta error coming off their own line. Mounties made the home side pay with Chad Grant showing to much strength to score. Cabramatta set up a grandstand finish with Eni Folau powering his way across to reduce the lead to a converted try. Mounties set the result in concrete with Leato bagging his 2nd just before the fulltime siren.

Blacktown Workers triumphed in a physical local derby eclipsing the Windsor Wolves to the tune of 20-12 at HE Laybutt Sporting Complex.

Blacktown were going into the match with only one win to their name so a positive result was a must. For Windsor they had the added incentive that long time figure Shenelle Haumono was celebrating his 150th match for the club.

Blacktown enjoyed the early ascendancy thanks to back to back penalties which gifted the home side great field position. They didn’t waste the gift with Akeripa Tia-Kilifi showing great strength to get to the try line. The lead was short lived with Windsor crossing seven minutes later. A simple short ball from Vila Halafihi sent veteran prop Hutch Maiava through a gap the size of the Sydney Heads to register 1st points for the visitors. The match then turned into a real slugfest with both sides guilty of sloppy errors. Windsor seemed to mount the most pressure but the Workers’ defence stood strong. It took a Windsor error coming off their own line to once again surrender good field position. Blacktown made them pay with Jerry Key keeping his try scoring streak going crashing over wide out. From the kick off, hulking prop John Leapai broke clear. The prop sold a dummy to the fullback before handing the ball of to a flying Charlie Latulipe who crossed under the sticks.

Blacktown extended their lead straight after the break when a Pat Weisner bomb came up trumps. Weisner was the only one who chased the kick, he managed to take his own bomb one handed before handing the ball off to Josh Grant. Grant then did a marvellous job sending the ball to a flying Sakeo Dibeci who crossed in the corner. Windsor hit back fifteen minutes later when Penrith SG Ball prop Cowen Epere powered his way across on debut. From then on the match turned into a real dog fight with both sides muscling up in defence. Windsor had countless opportunities to get back in the match but poor ball control extinguished any hope of a come back. Blacktown were made to do a lot of defending in the last twenty minutes and with stood everything the Wolves threw at them. Blacktown finally recorded their 2nd victory of the season after coming up just short on a couple of occasions earlier in the season. Windsor will rue some poor ball control. They Wolves enjoyed enough ball to win two games but squandered too much football to win the match.

The Peninsula Seagulls made it 9 from 9 to start 2014 with a 44-14 win over Blacktown Workers at HE Laybutt Sporting Complex.

In a match where the Seagulls were tipped to account for their opposition with ease, it took every inch of skill to overcome a stubborn Blacktown Workers side. The scoreline flatters the Seagulls to a degree with Blacktown the better of the two sides in the 1st stanza. It took a five try second half romp to swing the game the Seagulls way.

Peninsula enjoyed the early proceedings but failed to capitalize on good field position. Peninsula were then penalized for an obstruction which gave the home side great field position. From the ensuing set a long cut out ball from Jake Attard hit Daniel Cassone on the chest for the opening try. Six minutes later Peninsula hit back with a swift backline move which saw Jeremy Marshall cross in the corner. Peninsula hit the lead seven minutes later when a long ball from Willie Bishop found an unmarked Tarrant Mariner who crossed without a hand laid on him. The introduction of Joe Iosefa again proved a headache for the opposition with the hard running centre powering his way across after 27 minutes of play. Peninsula took the lead into the break with a simple try to Jai Jones. Jones was the benefactor of a good short ball from Harry Berryman.

Blacktown had the perfection opportunity to level the scores straight after the break but the final pass went to ground. Taviuni Mariota went on a long run, as the line beckoned he looked to send the ball to his centre where it looked like the prop could have scored himself. It was all down hill after that for the home side with Peninsula dominating the match from that point on. Choosing to run the ball on the last came up trumps for the visitors with Ryan Wheeler sending Mariner over for his 2nd try of the match. Eight minutes later Wheeler crossed the line for the 1st time this season extending the visitors lead to sixteen. The scoreline looked ugly for Blacktown after the Seagulls crossed for three tries in ten minutes blowing the score out to 44-10. A strong charge from Vinny Ngaro set up a try for George Palau before quick hands resulted in Richie Goodwin crossing in the corner. Peninsula then went 100 metres from the kick off with Ryan Oldfield going on a long charge down the touchline. Blacktown finished the match with an entertaining try to Jaron Smith. Blacktown can be proud of their 1st half performance proving they can match the top sides in the competition. The Peninsula Seagulls’ juggernaut continues to gather steam and they look more and more impressive as the season goes on.

The Auburn Warriors remain on top of the ladder after they were pushed all the way by a spirited Blacktown Workers side.

In a match where the lead changed seven times it took all the Auburn Warriors experience to get them over the line. Blacktown lost play maker Gus Jasmin ten minutes into the match then played the entire 2nd half with just one player on the bench after an injury forced Matt Callaghan from the field.

Blacktown opened the scoring for the match after 14 minutes of play with Hamilton Valeupa doing it all himself to cross from dummy half. The Warriors’ hit back was swift with John Sila on the end of a good short side raid. The introduction of John Leapai had immediate results with the big prop powering his way across under the sticks. The good work by the visitors was undone with a crucial error coming off their own line. From the ensuing scrum Auburn crossed through Luke Ferry. Straight from the kick off the Warriors put the ball through the hands which resulted in Sila going on a long run down field before linking up with Heka Nanai who crossed next to the sticks. Auburn took all the momentum into the half time break with Sione Kaiveleta on the end of a good long ball which saw the winger outpace the cover defence to score in the corner.

Blacktown made the perfect start to the 2nd stanza with try scoring machine Jerry Key crossing for his 10th of the season. Key has now scored a try in every match this season. Three minutes later Blacktown regained the lead with Leapai going on a rampaging run to the try line. The pendulum then swung back in favour of the Home side with Arthur Little scurrying across from dummy half. Blacktown then stole the lead back with Josh Fraser scoring wide out after a good long ball from Jake Attard. The scores were locked at 30 all when Nanai bagged his 2nd after a good string of passes sent the centre over to score. Auburn extended their lead with Sila grabbing his 2nd. As the match had gone all 2nd half Blacktown answered straight back with Key grabbing his 11th for the season giving his side a two point lead with ten minutes left to play. Auburn took a punt keeping the ball alive on the last. The punt paid dividends with Fiteli Fatai crossing under the sticks. The result was set in concrete when Matt Utai grubbed for himself, regained and scored under the sticks to cap of a very good match.
