Burwood Nth Ryde               16

Burwood North Ryde sunk to their sixth straight defeat going down 22-16 against the Guildford Owls at Goddard Park.

Very poor conditions greeted the players with rain and strong winds the order of the day. The match was always going to be a tight tussle and the score line reflected this. Although Guildford enjoyed a 12-0 lead at the break the margin could have been a lot bigger considering the possession they enjoyed. Burwood North Ryde showed great character fighting their way back into the match reducing the Owls lead to just two points mid way through the 2nd stanza. Two tries in the last twenty minutes broke the back of Burwood sinking them to their sixth straight defeat.

Guildford enjoyed a truck load of possession in the opening quarter of the match camping themselves deep in the red zone of the home side. Numerous attacking raids were met with brick wall defence from Burwood repelling all Guildford threw at them. It took an 85 metre effort from Lachlan Roe to register first points of the match. With Burwood deep on the attack a crossfield kick was swooped on by Roe who showed great amounts of speed for a big bloke to out pace the opposition to score. Jason Gray raised the flags for a 6-0 lead. The Owls lead was out to two converted tries seven minutes later when Chris Saab laid on a superb ball to Mark Daoud for the try. Burwood finally enjoyed some ball just before the break but Guildford flexed their defensive muscles negating everything Burwood threw at them. The defence was rewarded with a clean sheet at the games break.

Burwood made the perfect start to the 2nd stanza with a try to skipper Joe Flint after just six minutes of play. Flint showed great strength to power his way across after the ball was run on the last tackle. Burwood reduced Guildford’s lead to just two when Samiu Latu chimed into the backline laying on a nice ball to Barry Nathan to cross wide out. The good field position came on the back of three ill disciplined penalties from the visitors. Burwood’s momentum ceased in the 61st minute when Daoud laid on a superb inside ball to a flying Dylan McKeown who raced across the line to score. Guildford ensured the two points were theirs when Saab broke through the United defence before turning the ball back to Harmony Hunt for the match winner. Burwood crossed for a consolation try after a bomb was spilt at the back which saw Mitch Henderson on the spot to clean up the steeden and cross for the final try of the match.
