It took a try 30 seconds from full time to
swing the match in favour of the visitors. The last four pointer didn’t come
without controversy with the final pass appearing to go forward but the play was
left to continue and the rest they say is history.
Mounties made the perfect start to the match
grabbing two tries in the opening 11 minutes of play to skip out to a 12-0
lead. The first four pointer was laid on by Braden Batiste who sent a cross
field kick which was plucked out of the air by Dave Cahalane for the games’
opening try. Seven minutes later a nice flick pass from Chad Grant found an open
Kaine Matthews, Matthews then drew the fullback sending Mitchell Beggs on a
saloon passage to the line. Blacktown reciprocated five minutes later on the
back of a good scoot from Gus Jasmin. Jasmin caught the markers on the hop
before sending Sakeo Dibeci on a long run to the line. Blacktown reduced the
margin to two points when Tavita Siolo showed to much strength to score next to
the sticks. The match was going from end to end with Mounties securing the next
four pointer. Michael MacKinder provided a well placed kick which saw Adam
Tangata win the race to the ball. Just before the break Blacktown provided
their fans with some entertaining play. First it was Joel Jasmin laying on a
try for Pat Weisner before Dibeci chased a length of the field kick to score
wide out.
Blacktown went further ahead nine minutes into
the 2nd stanza with John Taaga crossing after three consecutive sets
on Mounties’ line. Mounties levelled the scores on the back of a Workers error.
Matthews showed to much power crossing under the sticks. Six minutes later
quick hands found MacKinder who did well to cross just inside the corner post.
The match looked gone when Wayne Dargan crossed in the 63rd minute.
Blacktown never gave up with Jerry Key running off a superb Weisner short ball
to score next to the sticks. This provided Blacktown with some much needed
confidence which was rewarded with a try to Jake Attard four minutes from time.
The lead up work from Gus Jasmin and Weisner was superb. Mounties had one last
throw of the dice sending the ball wide which saw Dargan grab his 2nd
and the match winner although there were question marks on the final ball.
Brendan Newton raised the flags for the sixth time in the match taking the full
time score to 40-36.
