Wentworthville Magpies won their third straight match beating Asquith 26-20 at a rain drenched Ringrose Park.

The opening to the match provided both teams with good opportunities to score points but numerous attacking raids came up fruitless. With rain clouds building at the back of the ground points were going to be of high importance. Asquith produced the first points of the match with an Aaron Groom grubber finding Adam Kalcina to open the scoring. Jack Hawkins raised the flags from a tough angle taking the score to 6-0. Wentworthville’s hit back was immediate with Groom trying a chip and chase which only resulted in his chases slipping over. This allowed Henry Raiwalui a free run to the ball, the fullback then turned the ball off to Saia Tanginoa who raced 75 metres to score the Magpies first try of the afternoon. Seven minutes later Asquith clawed the lead back with Hawkins sliding across wide out. The field position was gifted by some poor ball control from the home side. Hawkins pushed his kick wide leaving the score at 10-6. Wentworthville stole the lead when a Walter Vaeau flick pass found a flying Taunaola Kei who barged his way across the line to score. Danny Howard converted giving Wentworthville the lead for the first time in the match. Asquith took the lead just prior to the break with Brendan Hurd showing to much strength close to the line. Hawkins’ conversion made it 16-12 at the games break.

A mini monsoon engulfed the ground as the players were in the sheds. The temperature dropped quickly and the rain was blowing in sideways. This didn’t effect Wentworthville with Raiwalui sliding across to score just after the break. An error from the kick off gifted Asquith good field position. The visitors made Wentworthville pay with Mick Pearsal crossing in the corner after some quick hands along the backline. The game then turned into a real struggle. Most at the ground lost count of the errors. Both sides were guilty of squandering possession when in good field position. It took a 73rd minute try to Tanginoa to swing the pendulum back in favour of the home side. Wentworthville finally took advantage of the error count Asquith were providing. Wentworthville rounded out the match with a try to Justin Lemalu who collected a Brendan Waters kick to score as the siren sounded. Wentworthville’s coach Chris Yates wasn’t getting carried away with the result saying “I’ve been involved with Rugby League for a long time and lost games that i should have won so today makes up for those matches.” He went onto say “we will take a win like that early in the season but a lot of improvement is needed.”
