The Colts will look back on the match as the
one that got away. Leading 26-16 the Colts were left to rue two crucial
refereeing calls which in the end cost them the match. Auburn scored on both
occasions taking them to a 28-26 lead with 10 minutes left to play. Two late
tries to the Warriors took the score out to 38-26.
Kingsgrove made the perfect start to the match with Dave Vagau stretching out to score after just four minutes of play. Kingsgrove had the great field position after forcing an Auburn error in their own half. The Warriors hit back on the back of a penalty. The ball was run on the last with Hala Akaoula showing to much strength close to the line. Kingsgrove recaptured the lead after an Abbas Miski crossfield kick was spilt by the Warriors which left Coleman Edmond the simple task of falling on the ball to score. Auburn 2nd phase play was causing havoc with the Colts defence with their next four pointer going through numerous sets of hands before Chris Binge touched down for the four pointer. Kingsgrove shot themselves in the foot once again allowing the Warriors good field position on the back of another penalty. From the ensuing set Lindon McGrady sent John Sila over in the corner. Right on half time Addison Demetriou slotted a penalty goal leaving Auburn ahead 16-14 at the break.
It was a resurgent Kingsgrove Colts outfit
just after the break with Demetriou doing it all himself to score a well
deserved four pointer. Kingsgrove went ten clear when Edmond caught the
Warriors markers sleeping sliding across from acting half. Auburn then camped
themselves on the Colt’s line for a number of sets but the Colts’ defence was
rock solid repelling everything that the Warriors threw at them. It took a
dodgy call from the officials to allow the Warriors back into the match. It was
a good run from the scrumbase which saw McGrady slice through to go on a long
run to the line. Auburn were held up over the line in the 68th
minute but this didn’t halt their momentum with Sila grabbing his double on the
next play. The game was put out of the Colts reach at the 77th
minute mark when Binge reached out to score next to the sticks. The lead up
runs from Tupou Longi and George Tsikrikas were superb. The Warriors crossed
the line once more when the Colts attempted a short drop out only to see the
ball take a horrible bounce into the waiting arms of Heka Nanai who went the
required 15 metres to score.
