Blacktown Workers won their first match of the season with a tough 34-24 victory over the winless Auburn Warriors.

The match was between 2nd last and last with both sides yet to register a win in 2014. Both sides have been competitive in matches this season but have failed to win a match. Blacktown were boosted by the inclusion of Joseph Iosefa. Iosefa’s introduction to the match sparked Blacktown into action. The hard running centre added a new dimension to Blacktown’s attack which contributed to them getting the two points. Former 1st grader Eddie Su’a was named on the bench for Blacktown but was a late withdrawal from the match.

The Auburn Warriors registed 1st points of the match after just 37 seconds of play with Zakir Slaimankhel racing away to score under the sticks. The ball was spread wide with Aaron Pene sending Slaimankhel on a long run to the line. On the back of three consecutive penalties Blacktown hit back through Will Key. Key was the benefactor of a good ball from Toni Sassine. The introduction of Iosefa proved a master stroke from Blacktown coach Leon Latulipe with the big centre laying on a four pointer with his 1st touch of the ball. Iosefa handed the ball off to Sassine after a strong powerful run to the line. Auburn the stole the lead back with Sonny Tupouolo diving over from dummy half. The home side stretched their lead to a converted try after great vision from half Guy Hamilton. Hamilton put in a lovely crossfield kick which was taken by an unmarked Ziggy Kamoa for the try. Blacktown reduced the half time deficit to just two points with Iosefa going on another strong charge before sending a long ball out to Daniel Smith who crossed in the corner.

Auburn were first on the scoreboard for the 2nd stanza with Sam Seau crossing after three repeat sets on the Workers line. Blacktown then produced a perfect twenty minute period running in four tries to none extinguishing any chance the home side had. The 1st of the four pointers came after a Reece Grkinic crossfield kick was spilled at the back which saw Daniel Cassone win the race to the loose ball. Blacktown took the lead on the 60 minute mark with James Allison going on a determined run to the line. The visitors’ lead was out to ten when Yahia Masri ran off a good short ball from Grkinic. Grkinic then grabbed a well deserved four pointer with the hooker catching the Warriors markers on the hop to score the match winner. Auburn crossed for a consolation try to Michael Munday in the dying minutes.
